Lunch - Day 5: New Zealand require another 229 runs with 3 wickets remaining

The session began with a lot of promise for New Zealand but now India need only three wickets to wrap up their 500th Test. One of the overnight batsmen is still batting. Mitchell Santner, in his first Test in India, 24 years old, and yet he may become the most important player on this tour for his side. He has overtaken his captain Kane Williamson in terms of balls faced in Kanpur. However, Ravindra Jadeja, he who bowls nothing but maidens, made the first breakthrough and then Mohammed Shami found reverse swing and took out two wickets in two balls to put the match on the fast-track to a quick close.

Santner's partnership of 102 with Luke Ronchi, who played outstandingly for 80 off only 120 balls was perhaps the best spell of play New Zealand have had in the last two days. They may end up on the wrong side of the result at Green Park, but their fight may lead them to be a lot more hopeful of their chances in this series. Downside though, Mark Craig has been ruled out for the remaining two matches. Jeetan Patel, who last played international cricket in 2013, has been recalled

Mukesh: "In all the talk of spin pace bowling which opens the gate for India in many occasion, one such is when a Amla and ABD batted for long 5 session and in last session on 5th day from nowhere Umesh gets a breakthrough from some beautiful reverse swing bowling and then rest we all know. Though that was a masterclass show of defence. "

Pomil Proch: "A measure of team's mentality is how they like to pin blame once they have been beaten. The nature of pitches in India has come under the scanner in the recent past. But the Proteas were a bunch of thorough gentlemen and did not complain even though the most unplayable of pitch at Nagpur. Compare that to Australians on their SL tour. Knowing the NZ side, I don't expect them to complain about the pitch here(remember a Kiwi has top scored in the match) but it will be interesting to see their reaction for sure( that is if match does not end in a draw which looks highly improbable at the moment)"
